On October 23, Yamaha Corp. (10-1, Nakazawa-cho, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka ; President: Shuji Ito) began a polyphonic ringtone download service for users of mobile phones from France’s three leading telecom carriers: Orange S.A., Societe Francaise de Radiotelephone S.A. (SFR), and Bouygues Telecom S.A. The ringtone melodies are offered through Gallery, a content service offered jointly by the three French companies.
Orange, SFR, and Bouygues inaugurated the Gallery website in July 2003, and all of their portals are linked to Gallery, affording access to their users, who currently number in excess of 10 million. More than 250 different services are offered through the website and user numbers and services are expected to proliferate. The Gallery service is unique to France; elsewhere, mobile phone carriers offer only services exclusive to their own customers.
Serving Bouygues’ i-modeTM*1 users, in August 2003 Yamaha initiated the high-quality polyphonic ringtone melody distribution service, Yamaha Super Ringtone! in France. This marked the beginning of Japanese ringtone services in France. The link to the Gallery site is aimed at broadening the target market to users of mobile telecom services offered by Orange and SFR, France’s two largest mobile telecom carriers, and further enlarging Yamaha’s polyphonic ringtone melody distribution business.
In France, mobile phone subscribers now number 37.75 million out of a population of 59.45 million, and the diffusion rate is rising. As noted above, the three telecom carriers mentioned herein count a total of over 10 million subscribers of Gallery. Yamaha has drawn on its expertise in ringtone melodies accumulated in Japan to offer high-quality content complementing quality songs from many genres, including popular French songs, the latest global hits, club and house originals, classical, jazz, and music box tunes.
