YAMAHA CORPORATION (head office: Nakazawa-cho 10-1, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka; president: Shuji Ito) is set to launch its polyphonic ringtone download serviceYAMAHA Super Ringtonesin Europe, starting with Germany, on November 7. The fee-based service will be offered through a Website operated by Netsize, a leader in Europe in the fields of mobile business and consumer solutions.
Although the YAMAHA Super Ringtones Service is already offered through mobile carriers in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and France, this particular service will be offered through Netsize's Short Message Service (SMS), which covers all of Europe. YAMAHA's aim for the new service is to cultivate new customers and identify unmet market needs.
There are now more than 400 million mobile phone users in Europe, which represents the world's largest Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) market. Until recently, the standard mobile phone in Europe featured only monochrome screens and simple functions like text messaging. Now, however, mobile phones equipped with superior features and multimedia functions, including color screens and Java, MMS, and GPRS capabilities, are hitting the market. These phones are expected to make up 2030% of the market by the end of fiscal 2003. Due to the proliferation of new mobile services, the European mobile communications market is drawing attention for its great growth potential.
Netsize is Europe's leading access provider, connecting to the infrastructures of mobile telecom operators in individual countries to cover virtually the entire continent. YAMAHA already offers ringtones and other services through existing mobile telecom operators in individual countries. The service offered in conjunction with Netsize is aimed at achieving the further market penetration of the service through the use of a full-scale Website. The service will be initially rolled out in Germany, followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy, for a total of seven nations.
