AV/IT Manufacturing Company in Suzhou, China, Yamaha Electronics (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., to be Established.
Operations to Begin in March 2003

In the middle of May, 2002, having received approval from the Chinese government, YAMAHA Corporation (Head Office: 10-1, Nakazawa-cho, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka; President: Shuji Ito) established Yamaha Electronics (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. (YES), an AV/IT products manufacturing company in Suzhou, China. With operations scheduled to begin in March 2003, YAMAHA is building manufacturing facilities and performing other preparatory activities.
Until now, two local sales subsidiaries have been handling the sales and marketing of YAMAHA's AV/IT products in China. One of these, Yamaha Electronics China Ltd., was established in Hong Kong in February 1996 to market AV products in China. The other, Yamaha Electronics Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., was established in Shanghai in January 2001 to sell both AV and IT products.
Through the establishment of YES, YAMAHA is aiming to strengthen its AV/IT operations in the Chinese market, which is expected to undergo rapid growth. This will be accomplished through the promotion of a unified marketing policy that takes advantage of China's newly opened market, the result of its accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). Under this policy, YAMAHA will procure goods produced at YES's manufacturing facility in China, and these goods will be marketed via the sales and marketing subsidiary in China.
Suzhou, the site of the manufacturing company, has several outstanding features. First, it has strong market potential due to its location at the heart of the Yangzte River delta region, which has 200 million inhabitants. Second, as a national development district, the region is receiving substantial infrastructure support, which facilitates the procurement of parts and materials as well as product distribution. These factors make it an ideal location for the performance of manufacturing and sales activities.
YES will manufacture AV/IT products which contain the latest digital technologies including home theater products. These products will be promoted and distributed by Yamaha Music and Electronics (China) Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Beijing), an investment holding company that is currently being established in order to facilitate the smooth development of Yamaha's operations in China. After commencing operations, YES will begin manufacturing products for markets in China and abroad and, in future, will also serve as an export-oriented manufacturing base complementary to that of YEM (Malaysia's AV/IT manufacturing plant).
