Yamaha to Provide 'Melo-Ring' Cell Phone Ringing Tone Download Service for Hong Kong Customers of Hutchison Telecom

Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka, March 27, 2002 – (JCN Newswire) - Yamaha Corp. will provide a cell phone ringing tone download service to customers of Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Ltd. (Hutchison Telecom), the leading mobile operator in Hong Kong with the largest subscriber base and high quality network.

Due to start on March 28, the new service will allow customers to download both monophonic and polyphonic ringing tone melodies. Yamaha already offers ring melody download services in Taiwan, China, Spain and Germany.

At present 5.45 million, or approximately 81 percent, of Hong Kong's 6.73 million inhabitants own mobile phones. Hutchison Telecom is the largest mobile operator in Hong Kong, enjoying a 30 percent market share of the local mobile industry.

Ring melodies are already popular in Hong Kong, and J-Pop is also a firm favorite. Yamaha's entry to the Hong Kong ring melody market looks set to do much to further accelerate the uptake of this new consumer option.

Yamaha is one of the leading providers of ringing melodies to cell phones, offering a choice of more than 6,800 tunes to over 3.2 million subscribers in Japan by February 2002. Putting to optimal use the know-how and music rights gained through this success in the Japanese market, Yamaha will provide customers in Hong Kong with high-quality polyphonic ring melodies taken from a wide variety of genres as part of its overseas expansion in this burgeoning business.
