Yamaha to Provide Polyphonic Cell Phone Ringing Service
to Spain's Telefónica Móviles

Hamamatsu City, January 31, 2002 (JCN Newswire) -- Yamaha Corp. is pleased to announce that from the end of February it will start providing a polyphonic cellular phone ringing tone download service to Telefónica Móviles, the cellular phone unit of Spain's former national telecommunications operator.

Of Spain's total population of 39 million people, about 25.3 million people (or 65 percent) use cell phones, making it a country with one of the highest cell phone diffusion rates in Europe. Of these, Telefónica Móviles has the largest market share with 15 million subscribers, or 59 percent of the total.

The new service will start with a line-up of 500 ringing tones, mainly tunes from Spain, the U.S. and U.K. Each month will see the addition of between 20 and 30 new tunes, including more local tunes added to line-ups by overseas subsidiaries. Yamaha is one of the leading providers of ringing melodies to cell phones, offering a choice of more than 6,000 songs to about 3.2 million subscribers in Japan as of the end of January. The Company has decided to take advantage of this experience and its extensive archive of song data to expand operations overseas with the distribution of many types of high quality, polyphonic ringing tone melodies.
