Yamaha Group's New Record Company to Sign
Chage & Aska, Miyuki Nakajima
Yamaha Music Communications Coming Soon |
 |
As part of Yamaha's comprehensive media strategy, Yamaha will establish Yamaha Music Communications on May 1 for the purpose of strengthening its music content business. By owning its own recording company, Yamaha will be able to comprehensively control every stage in the music-making process from music popularization to production, creation, and delivery.
The environment surrounding the recording industry has undergone some significant changes in recent years due to the ability to transmit music over the Internet, a medium that is expected to move further into the mainstream in the near future, and the arrival on the scene of new forms of music delivery, such as on-line sales. This recording company is being established as a means of responding to the data and distribution changes taking place in the recording industry. Yamaha has discovered many artists with its Popular Song Contest (1969-86) and World Music Festival (1970-89), as well as with the Teen Music Festival (TMF, 1987~) and MusicQuest events, which continue today. During its long history of involvement in the spread of popular music, Yamaha has cultivated a great deal of know-how in producing new artists. In the field of music transmission, Yamaha has also developed MidRadio, a site where people can listen to and purchase MIDI music, and it is continually improving the infrastructure of that site. By combining the organizational aspects of disseminating and producing music with the physical infrastructure of music transmission, Yamaha can use new methods to control the full cycle of the recording industry from music popularization to production, creation, and delivery. Because Yamaha Music Communications will start out by signing leading artists Chage & Aska and Miyuki Nakajima, it will already have a big advantage when it enters the industry.
The new company after it has been established will be mainly involved in selling conventional CDs by existing artists, but it is planning to aggressively develop its Internet-based music distribution business and its e-commerce initiatives.
