“Yamaha Forest” Report on the 4th Year of a Joint Project between Yamaha Corporation and Yamaha Motor Corporation for Afforestation in Indonesia |

“Yamaha Forest,” a collaborative project between Yamaha Corporation and Yamaha Motor Corporation aimed at afforestation in Indonesia, has now entered its fourth year. The environmental conservation and educational assistance this afforestation provides is intended to contribute to society in Indonesia, a vital manufacturing base for both corporations. The afforestation activities will see 150 to 200 thousand trees planted in 120 hectares over a five year period, aiming to return deforested land to a near-natural state of forestation. The activities themselves are supported by OISCA International, an organization with a history in agricultural development, research support, and environmental protection in the Asia-Pacific region.
This annual planting event was held in Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi Regency on November 30, 2008.
The number of people participating in this event, including local residents, elementary and middle school students, and administrative personnel, increased this year to 2,350. A total of approximately 470 staff from both Yamaha companies attended, including Mr. Ben Sasaki, executive officer and member of the Board of Yamaha Corporation, Mr. Masanori Suzuki, manager of the General Affairs Division of Yamaha Motor Corporation, staff concerned with environmental issues at both organizations, and the presidents and employees of their Indonesian subsidiaries, all of whom took part in the planting together with local children.
This year they were able to plant approximately 5,000 seedlings during the course of the day. Additionally, project members intend to plant around 30,000 mahogany, teak, and eucalyptus seedlings in a 30 hectare plot this financial year. |

Nourished by the local climate, the seedlings planted over the past three years have prospered. Some seedlings planted in the first year of the project now stand over 10 meters high.
In addition, the project is also now conducting ongoing environmental education activities, educational support, and regional assistance in conjunction with the planting to ensure that these forest preservation activities continue long into the future. Achievements over the past year include the construction of two shared water reservoirs, a supply of chairs, desks, school and sporting equipment, the raising of seedlings in conjuction with schools and agricultural groups, the founding of an eco-camp in association with World Environment Day. These activities, along with plans that include initiatives to continue the supply of school equipment will continue until March of next year. |
